Salmon Viewing Season in Issaquah

Salmon aren’t just fish in Issaquah—they’re bona fide celebrities! These finned superstars swim through the city’s culture, splash across public art, and even photobomb local business logos (including the city’s own). The spotlight is brightest at the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery, the main stage for fall’s salmon extravaganza—running from late August all the way to November. Drop by any day (no ticket needed!) to check out cool exhibits, toss some snacks to the trout, or peek at underwater drama through aquarium windows.

Since 1936, the hatchery has been rolling out the red carpet for Chinook (king) and Coho (silver) salmon, who make their epic comeback tour through Lake Sammamish and Issaquah Creek every fall. Plenty of secret (and not-so-secret) spots along the creek and around town give fans front-row seats to this fishy phenomenon. The fabulous folks at Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery (FISH) run tours that are anything but fishy. Book a guided adventure or chart your own path with their audio guides and maps. Got young explorers in tow? Let them loose on a self-guided scavenger hunt! And don’t miss showstoppers like the Salmon on Sunset Celebration (Saturday, September 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) or the legendary Salmon Days Festival (October 4 & 5)—events that reel in giant crowds year after year. For some behind-the-scenes spawning action, swing by on any Tuesday in October between 9:00 a.m. and noon.

The Friends of Issaquah Salmon Hatchery operate the environmental science center on the hatchery grounds that include both guided and self-guided tours, with certified salmon docents on hand for walk-up questions and wayfinding.

Guided tours last 45-60 minutes. Tours are led by trained volunteer docents or staff and last around 45 minutes and highlight the cultural, historical and ecological significance of salmon, hatchery operations & the importance of hatcheries.

Tours should be booked 2 weeks in advance.

The FISH gift shop is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.—with weekend hours stretching until 6:00 p.m.—brimming with salmon swag, quirky gifts made by locals, eco-friendly toys, and unique creations from regional and Native artists.
